Reimagining the intercom experience for Urmet technolgy.

Goal

Urmet, an Italian building technology company, has been undergoing a digital transformation to modernize its products and services. Finsa has been a long-term partner in this journey, most recently rethinking a new intercom & access control experience for residential and commercial buildings.

CallMe has been an ongoing project since 2022, aimed at defining a new design language for Urmet's intercom systems. The initial focus was on redesigning the mobile app, which then paved the way for a completely new digital ecosystem later adopted across multiple products and devices.

Role & Contributions

When I joined Finsa, my very first task was designing the app icon for the app stores. Soon after, my role quickly evolved into that of an active contributor to the progressive adaptation of the user experience across multiple devices and new app releases. Most recently, I led the design of an intercom device that adopted the CallMe design system, extending it to include safety and building management functionalities.

In short, my role has been to:

  • Maintain and update the UI system to ensure consistency across platforms and devices.
  • Design new UX flows and interactions for additional app functionalities.
  • Define the information architecture of new products.
  • Test and validate new features through user feedback and iteration.
  • Collaborate closely with developers to ensure seamless implementation of designs.

Process & Key insights

Adaptability by Design

One of the biggest challenges was scaling and adapting the app experience across different screen formats and dedicated intercom monitors. This required extensive modifications and refinements to the existing design system. As a result, we have beeen developing a flexible design system, ensuring a consistent user experience across all platforms.
  • Built a modular design system for easy scalability across various screen sizes and devices.
  • Tested different user interaction patterns to optimize usability across touch and physical interfaces.
  • Explored development constraints to ensure the best balance between design feasibility and performance.

Key Takeaways

The new design system has been successfully deployed in a wide variety of products, across countries including Europe, China, East Asia, and Latin America. By refining the UX and UI for multiple devices, we helped create a service that is intuitive, scalable, and adaptable to different user habits and technological infrastructures.
  • Scalability is key – Designing across multiple devices requires a flexible, modular UI system that can adapt to different screen sizes and hardware capabilities.
  • Technology & everyday habits – One of the most interesting aspects of this project was designing in a space where technology directly influences daily routines, requiring a balance between efficiency, security, and usability.
  • Iterating beyond MVP – Continuative UX improvements enhance long-term usability and adoption, ensuring relevance in an evolving digital landscape.
